Caravan in Clare, August 16th

We have planned our first ever 7 night Irish holiday to stay in this beautiful Holiday park, set in a unique natural location on the shores of Lough Derg in Mountshannon, Co. Clare. This site specialise in caravan & camping, watersports and boat hire, with Holy Island only a boat trip away, and the resident Red squirrels will enhance your experience at the park, but they won’t share their nuts!!

Arrive at your leisure on Friday August 16th and settle into your mobile home, with smaller 2 Berth available sleeping 2, or larger 4 Berth sleeping up to 4/5. All mobile holiday homes are fully equipped and include kitchen, fridge, full bathroom, shower, hot water, TV & heater. No bed Linen is provided, but can be hired onsite if pre-booked, but to keep costs down just bring your own sheets, pillow cases, blankets, etc. Provided are pillows, delph, cutlery, cooking utensils & gas. Electricity is FREE of charge, but Gas carries a surcharge of €3 per night, and an €80 Cleaning/Damage cash deposit will be requested on arrival, fully refunded on departure once the unit has been given the once-over.

So now you’re here, what to do?! You’re on the banks of the glorious Lough Derg, and onsite there are a range of water sports available. Hire a motor boat with 5x Horse power for €50 a day, (€50 deposit required), a Rowing boat for €25 per day or €10 per hour, or a 2 seater Kayak for €15 for the first hour, €12 for the second hour, or €35 per day. With so much to see and explore on Lough Derg, a full day hire is definitely recommended, and life jackets are provided and required for all water sports.

For one day during your stay we have arranged a boat cruise from Mountshannon town quay. Holy Island on Lough Derg and the river Shannon is one of the most famous monastic sites in Ireland. Its many attractions include a well-preserved Round Tower, the ruins of six churches, a Holy Well, a unique graveyard with slabs dating from the eight century, Bullaun Stones, a cell like structure, which is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Ireland and a ‘bargaining’ stone where many a marriage was brokered. Their secluded position has enabled them to survive in a wonderful state of preservation. Your boat captain is a local historian and author, and will bring you out to Holy Island to enjoy a guided tour or just lounge around and have a picnic, so you can get a different view of the lake for a few hours.

Also on one day during your stay, a return trip into Killaloe! A bus will collect you and bring you to the south side of the lake to the twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina, where you can enjoy the outdoor swimming pool, huge playground, lakeside walks, and of course all the restaurants and bars overlooking the lake to while away the afternoon. Another cruise is available on this end of the lake too, or you might choose Stand Up Paddle-Boarding, canoeing, or hire a little boat and do some exploring.

Close to Mountshannon are the famous Mountshannon Eagles, home of the White-Tailed Sea Eagles on Lough Derg. A viewing cabin is set up on the quayside, with powerful telescopic binoculars and telescopes to give you a birds-eye view of these amazing creatures secluded on their own private island in the Lake. Perfect for any avid bird-watchers, but also for anyone who wants to watch a beautiful eagle in its natural habitat, this is something you must experience for yourself.

On one evening during the week, we have arranged dinner in a local restaurant. Within walking distance of the campsite, you can all enjoy the local hospitality and cuisine together, and maybe decide to repeat it again during the week!
