Caves in Andalucia, August 2018

Another first for us, a holiday in beautifully renovated caves with stunning scenery located just 2 hours from Alicante. This amazing spot boasts a range of accommodation options, all fashioned around these ancient cave dwellings, but with all the comfort of a luxury hotel.

Off the beaten path, and not a traditional destination for a Sun Holiday, this is a mecca for families with younger and older children. There is plenty of space to spread out and explore around the caves, one specifically for the children with direct access from inside the public area through a tunnel.

terraza bar

The beautiful swimming pool and large sun terrace boasting spectacular mountain views, lush Arabic Baths, and the convenience of an onsite restaurant and bar with sunny terrace means you can easily spend an afternoon relaxing here.

Your accommodation is where is gets really exciting though, and is likened to a kind of relaxation from the dawn of time. In prehistoric times the basin of Baza was filled by a huge blue lake where Mammoths and Rhinoceroses grazed under the hungry eyes of primitive European man. Their remains & fossils can be admired nowadays at the museum nearby in Orce.

fachada hotel

Until 40 years ago this savage, beautiful forgotten part of the provence of Granada was full of small hamlets carved into the hills around the barren lands formed by the drying out of the old lake. Today restored to its original splendour at one of those Hamlets, where moors, plaster miners and subsistence farmers have successively sought refuge.

This family-run property has been lovingly turned into holiday accommodation that makes the most of this breathtakingly beautiful location, formed by this unique way of life.

Smaller families can choose between an en-suite double bedroom or a small 1-bed apartment with combined living/dining area. The double bedroom guests have the use of a communal kitchen to share, and of course a private fully equipped shower room.

All of the Cave Apartments have a kitchen, dining and living area, private bathroom or shower room, sunny terrace, large comfortable double bed and some with additional bedrooms for larger families or those wishing to share.

If you’d like a treat for yourself, in the heart of the earth is the Hammam (Arab Baths). A Hammam is a Turkish or Arab bath designed to cleanse and relax the body. Since ancient times there are various forms of bath; They may be steam and / or immersion. These Hammam have three rooms contrasting each other: a pool of hot water (steam), a pool of cold water and a temperate zone. It is recommended to switch between the cold water and hot water and take a break from time to time to make the most of the experience. In the space of Hammam are also changing rooms, a massage room, another siesta room, and a solarium available.

On warm summer days you can swim and cool off in the pool, and at night, spending a lively evening with your neighbouring cave-dwellers. In addition you can complete your stay with a trip to the highlands of Granada. These beautiful surroundings will give you endless possibilities for activities for both children and adults. From Al Khatib you can take excursions by car, on foot or by bicycle through little-known areas, with a memorable natural and cultural beauty. You can also spend a day out visiting the beautiful villages that the region offers, all easily accessible.

In the nearby museums and sites of Orce and Galera you can admire the archaeological remains of the first European settlers of the Iberian and Roman culture. Also, you can contemplate the beautiful vegetation of the Sierra de Baza, Castril and Sagra. Just one hour away is Granada, where you can visit the Alhambra or climb to Sierra Nevada skiing. Or if you want, swim in the beautiful and unspoiled beaches of Cabo de Gata, just two hours away.

The closest village, Baza, is just 7km from the property, a short and inexpensive taxi journey. Enjoy the Cathedral, narrow Arabic streets with beautiful wooden balconies around Calle Zapateria, the old Jewish district with narrow white streets around Santiago Church, Spain’s oldest preserved Arabic Bath and countless Museums exploring this fascinating cultural area.

There is a street market in Baza every Wednesday morning, with many other street markets during the week a little further afield. Days out could include Jabalcon Mountain, Lake Negratin with its pedal boats, restaurants and beach swimming. The famous Natural Park of Sierra de Baza has endless hiking trails suitable for children and adults of all ages, with forest paths through the valley finishing at the famous Narvaez restaurant for refreshments.

Suspension bridges, tunnels, wooden boardwalks, bathing in cold waterfalls, it’s all within a short drive from your accommodation, and a far cry from the busier holiday destinations.

Menu prices, activities and extras such as a massage or two are very inexpensive, and well worth it for the relaxation and complete enjoyment of your holiday, while the children run around the caves discovering new hiding places.

Join us on this extended holiday to inland Spain, Andalucia, to stay in beautiful cave dwellings for 10 nights. The best airport to fly in to is Alicante, which is approximately 2 hours from the property. For this reason we extended the stay past the norm of 7nights to make up for the travel time, but it’s more than worth it, and if you’d like to stay even longer just ask!

As it is such a long commute from the airport to the accommodation, it means that transfers can only be included if you fly into Alicante on August 10th with Ryanair. Flights are available from Kerry for €196, arriving in Alicante at 1pm, or from Dublin for €183, arriving an hour later at about 2pm, and transfers will be booked to collect you all together at 2.30pm. If you require transfers on different arrival days or times to the rest of the group just ask and I’ll be happy to arrange it for you.
