Glamping in Donegal, August 14th & 24th

This spectacular trip is to a Lakeside Eco Lodge in Donegal, on the Wild Atlantic Way, with Luxury Glamping on 90 acres, and is opening for the first time Summer 2018, and we’ll be there. We have been given exclusive use of the site for One Parent Holidays, so all 5 Mongolian Yurts are for us!

Located 20 minutes from Donegal Town, on the Wild Atlantic Way the famously wild and beautiful touring route along the west coast of Ireland,  the site is set upon 90-acres and has a rich and diverse landscape ranging from wildflower meadows to heather-covered hills, leafy groves and wild mossy bogland.

There are two lakes – Lough Acully and the larger Lough Mardal – and panoramic views of Donegal Bay, Sliabh Liag and the Bluestack mountains. The setting is secluded, tranquil and beautiful – an idyllic setting for glamping underneath the stars. It is perfectly located for adventure and exploration amongst the Irish North West’s most spectacular hiking, surfing, fishing and cycling spots as well as having many of Ireland’s top beaches within a few miles.

The onsite facilities include The Eco Lodge building, a communal building for use by all guests, is being built as we speak. It provides a large, warm, homely hang-out space with beautiful views. Keeping in mind that Lough Mardal Lodge offers an opportunity to escape the modern world, use of mobile phones and devices is discouraged in this building. Newspapers, books, board-games and puzzles are provided and there is always the old-fashioned art of conversation with fellow-travelers!

With panoramic views of lake, forestry, sea and mountains the Eco Lodge building will be a central hub for glamping guests. A low impact, environmentally-friendly strawbale roundhouse made from natural materials, the roof will be alive with grasses and wildflowers excavated from the earth around it, blending the building with the landscape from which it came. With exposed beams spiraling above visitor’s heads, the Eco Lodge will be a large social hub with a big open fire, fully equipped for cooking, dining and chilling with beautiful panoramic views.

Its main feature will be it’s large round open-plan hangout space where one can sink into a relaxing sofa and curl up in front of a big open fire. A peaceful spot to read a book, play cards, meet fellow travellers or plan the day’s activities. It will offer a warm, dry refuge after a cross-country hike or a busy day’s adventure, or an exploration outing with the kids.Inside the Eco Lodge you’ll find a Reception area for Check-in/out, fully equipped kitchen including designated storage cupboard for each yurt (for guests’ own supplies), Large fridge, dining area, Big open fire, Comfortable seating, Flushing loos – which flow through an environmentally-friendly reedbed system. (Fully Accessible), Hot showers (Fully Accessible, Wet Room, outdoor terrace, a range of wellies in most sizes for borrowing, and individual lockable storage spaces assigned to each yurt with re-charging socket.

The five yurts offer glamping luxury, comfort and style.  They are south-facing with beautiful views, they all have windows, clear dome sky-lights and a wood-burning stove. Well-spaced from each other ensuring seclusion and privacy, each  fully furnished and individually styled with sheepskins, goosedown duvets, Donegal woollen blankets, fluffed pillows and crisp white linen. There is a king-size bed plus sofa bed but additional beds can also be added. Each yurt has its own fire-pit for cooking.

All are beautifully large and spacious 20ft yurts, fully insulated and luxuriously furnished. They each have a private outdoor seating area with firepit, King-size bed & sofa bed (additional beds can also be provided), Wood-burning stove with supply of firewood, 3 x Windows, Comfortable seating and homely furniture, Lake, Forestry or Mountain views (most yurts with all three), Hot water bottle, Fresh towels and crisp white linen, Candle Lanterns, Free WiFi, Travel Cot and a private, secluded and beautiful setting. There is no electricity in the yurts, except on request if required for special needs.

On one day during your stay, we have arranged a fantastic day out to Donegal Bay. Join us as the bus collects everyone at the campsite in the afternoon, and heads into Donegal Town to meet the Donegal Bay Waterbus! So relax and enjoy approximately 75 minutes exploring Donegal Bay. The boat is weatherproof, comfortable and completely safe, from the helm there is a entertaining yet informative commentary on the sights of special interest, Tea\Coffee and beer\spirits are available from the bar, and on the return leg of your trip an onboard sing-a-long music caberet will keep you entertained as the waterbus glides back to the harbour.

After the tour is some free time to wander around Donegal Town, before you’re all expected in a Habour-side Restaurant for your evening meal. Enjoy local specialties in a casual atmosphere, with a 3 course menu serving a variety of seafoods, meat dishes and vegetarian options, and a very good children’s menu for the kiddies.

After your meal there is a little free time before the bus returns to bring you back to the comfort of your luxury Yurt in plenty of time for campfire and chats before settling in for the night.

The rest of your trip is completely free time, and outdoor adventure in nature’s playground at Lough Mardal is a good place to start. With a very shallow shoreline the lake at Lough Mardal is perfect for paddling, swimming or examining lakeshore rocks and pebbles! There are many trails through soft mossy peatlands (particularly fun in bare feet) for wild encounters with frogs and insects. Run through fluffy white bog-cotton, or take a ramble up the hill to meet the donkeys.

Once explorations have been exhausted at Lough Mardal next stop is the beach! There are two beautiful beaches within just a few minutes, ideal for bucket and spade fun, shell-collecting and a splash about in the sea; Rossnowlagh, Murvagh as well as Tullan Strand a little bit further away in Bundoran.

Head out to the amazing Waterworld in Bundoran, 18km away, an indoor aqua adventure playground for toddlers and kids of all ages.
