St. Patrick’s Day, Galway 2016

We’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in style this year, because there are so many good reasons. It’s the start of one of the longest Easter mid-term breaks the schools have ever had, it’s the Centennary of the 1916 Rising, and of course it’s St. Patrick’s Day!

The famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Galway is certainly one to behold. Influenced by the theatre group Macnas, this hugely entertaining group were the first in Ireland to liven up the once fairly boring procession of bands and tractors.

Creating magic, mayhem and general buffoonery on the streets of Galway, this parade is a fantastic day out for everyone.

But before the parade starts, you have to check into your hotel! As soon as the kids finish school on Wednesday 16th March, throw them and a few green clothes in the car and head for the wonderful 4* Connacht Hotel just outside Galway City Centre.

On Wednesday evening we’ll have a sit-down meal in the restaurant to start the little break off in style, get to know each other and relax before the next day’s celebrations.

Enjoy the swimming pool, settle in and enjoy your time here, it’s one of our favorite spots to visit with One Parent Holidays.

On Thursday morning, enjoy a lovely breakfast, maybe take advantage of the morning Kids Club from 9.30am – 1pm, but catch a bus outside the hotel in plenty of time for the start of the parade. We’ll have more details on the starting point and time in the coming weeks, so we’ll make sure you know everything you need in plenty of time.

Enjoy an amazing day out in and around the city, and soak up everything Galway has to offer. We suggest you plan to spend the day in the city and make the most of the street entertainers, market stalls and atmosphere to celebrate the day in style.

Once you’re all exhausted after a day full of excitement, head back to the hotel and it’s time to unwind. We’ll have a more casual meal this evening in the hotel bar, with a wonderful spread of hot finger food and freshly made sandwiches. Choose from chicken samosas, vegetarian spring rolls, garlic mushrooms, chicken goujons, spicy wedges and onion bhajis for some hot comfort food. We’ll also have a tray of fresh sandwiches, wraps and baguettes to choose from, and there will be plenty for everyone.

The Kids Club is also open this evening, so you can feed the kids and send them upstairs for some supervised activities. Catering for children aged 3-15yrs, with age appropriate games and activities, the children will be kept very busy with face painting, arts & crafts and story time for the younger ones, to air hockey, pool and playstation for the older children.
